Hygiene Re-Vitalized

They say hygiene should be the top-most priority in today’s world. To live a healthy life we should learn to be hygienic as well as ensure that our surrounding is hygienic. As we know in today’s world the rich is always a germ phobic and to say about the poor, well if they get two square meal a day, that’s enough for them. They have no qualms for hygiene. That carelessness shown is also reflected in their health. As you might have seen the poor kids look malnutrition. Only thing that we need to realize is eating food in unhygienic conditions causes a lot of diseases.
We all love eating out, be it a 5 star restaurant or a road side dhabas offering various delicacies of Indian cuisine. But do we ever realize what effect it has on our health. How many of us have ever given a second’s thought to the hygienic condition of the places where we eat. For an example, many of us love pani-puri. The stalls are regularly visited by youngsters as well as adults. Have you ever realized what is the condition of the shopkeeper’s hand. He keeps on wiping his hand in the same cloth after preparing the masalas. It’s unhygienic as well as disgusting but none of us pay heed to it. Don’t you guys think we should do something that would ensure our healthful living?

Well coming to the task at hand, we realized that even we are not conscious about our health. You must be wondering what the task has to do with our realization. First of all being a college students and   hostelites, fast food is our only recluse. The hostel food is never up to the mark and thus the students resort to fast foods and the ‘thela walas’. And you definitely would have seen the condition in which they serve us food, but even knowing all these we could not give up our need for the fast food because it has become an integral part of our being.  Now every problem has a solution and this problem too has a solution. The solution came as the task by ‘Reform’n’ation’. The task asked us to distribute plastic gloves to the food stalls in our locality and educate them about basic health and hygiene. So we started working on the task.
First of all we went in search of the shop where we could get those plastic hand gloves. We went to the market area of our city and searched for it in all related stores. Many shop-keepers didn’t even understand what we required. But after a lot of searching and querying we found a shop which offered us what we wanted, we needed at least 20 packets. So, he told us that he would need to search for it and it would take time, so we waited.
After searching for some time he got the packets and we bought 25 packets. Then the next step was to distribute them in food stalls. So first we had to decide where all we could give those gloves. We came to a conclusion that it would be more beneficial if we give those to roadside vendors such as ‘pani-puri walas’, fast food stalls and the snacks shops. This was decided because those were the places where the students frequently visit the most. Also we decided to start from the shops in the nearby areas. Thus we went to the nearest locality and started off with the snacks stalls.
The first shops we went were hesitant and they thought it to be a prank. So they didn’t give us any heed. We tried to tell them the benefits of using the plastic gloves. The ‘pani-puri-wala-bhaiya’ came to our rescue as he was the first one to respond with a positive attitude. He heard our views patiently and then simply told us “Kitna loge ek packet ka?”

To this we replied him back with a childish smile on our faces that “Bhaina it’s free.” In this way we distributed some gloves in the nearby shops. This gave us some confidence that maybe we could convince many shopkeepers to adopt this method and use the plastic hand gloves while preparing food as well as while serving them to their customers.
We went to each and every shop where they tend to use their hands for preparing or serving foods. Along with that we also told them about the diseases that are caused due to the unhygienic conditions in which they prepare and serve food. In this way we distributed 25 packets of gloves to roadside vendors, sweet shops and dhabas. Thus our task was completed and we inched another step closer to serve the society in a better way.
It can be described as a small step towards building a healthy and hygienic society. As we took a step if all others do the same then this nation would be a much healthier place to live in. So this would be sole request to the vendors whom we distributed the hand gloves to use it as well as to encourage their fellow vendors to also use gloves so that they maintain a hygienic surrounding for their food.

A visit to Aganwadi at Patia

An Anganwadi means "courtyard shelter" in Hindi. It was started by the Indian government under the ICDS scheme. A visit to to such a place was not an easy affair, we had to visit many higher officials to just get the permission to visit it. After a toil of 2 hours we were allowed to pay a visit and beautify the  place. But the irony was the place we were allowed to visit was 17 km interior of the Patia village ; and it was raining cats and dogs.

After a painstaking journey we were finally in the Anganwadi. But to my surprise it was a single room shelter without proper facilities and the whole lawn in-front of it was filled with the rain water. Our main task was to carry out the Plantation drive and ask few questions and beautify it but everything seemed damaged and impossible. The toilet they had was used as the goat and cow shelter, the only source of water was a tube well that had supplied you with water sufficient with iron quantity to cure your anemia.

The working conditions are poor and the salary of an Anganwadi worker is less than our monthly expenditure. All these made us think, what have we been doing to build our rural India. My team members felt helpless seeing these conditions but with utmost pleasure they carried out our tasks and promised them to help them in the future.

We always complain of the rising prices and the taxes we pay but do we really think why do we pay these taxes, and where does this tax really go. The money collected from us is utilized by our Government for the welfare of our rural India but what we saw was totally different from what we thought. Life is hard but they still enjoy the hardships and never complain. We must learn something from them and respect them.

A visit to Asha Kiran

Ahalya-aka-Alia (left)

After watching the plight of the slum dwellers we moved on to visit a Less Privileged Home(LPH). The children living here have hailed from the interiors parts of Orissa. Their parents wanted them to have a better future so left them here.

We have had visited Asha Kiran(LPH) many times so were aware of their problems and sorrows. The girls residing there are too sweet and extra talented. Girls there are too energetic and friendly too. They go to a nearby government school for their basic education and in our leisure time we spend few hours with them teaching them, playing them and also learning from them.

One of the cutest girl Ahalya-aka-Alia, is the most notorious and energetic of all the 30 girls residing there. She loves chocolates, playing in the sand and drawing. We conducted a painting competition for the girls for their entertainment and to fulfill our hunt for a talent.
Girls Busy Drawing.

Soon we will be uploading the videos of few of their brilliant lessons they taught us on our visit.

A visit to Slum

This Sunday plans were well executed for a visit to the slum. After deciding the works to be carried out our group headed towards to the slums located by the NH-5. The living condition was very poor, they don't even have a proper road connecting them. Sanitation is too poor along with their financial conditions. The people there are still fighting with the state government for the subsidies meant for them.

We tried to reach each and every person and inquired about their health conditions, the regularity of water supply and the income of the families. The data collected surprised us, few families had more than 10 members residing in a house of single room. Most of the children dropped studies after 10th grade. People hardly know anything thing about sanitation. They have got a Municipal waterline connection but they are solely dependent on the slum's central well. Dengue and typhoid are the most common diseases there.

After seeing all these our whole team was moved and decided to implement few of the protective measures to eradicate the Sanitation problems but still the main question is left unanswered... Where are the government officials??

Finally, we have decided to help those people on our own stake. Next visit we will be trying to help the needy ones from the slum and help the children learn few skills that can give them a chance to earn a livelihood.

The Big Start !!!

I first viewed IIT-B's initiative of a challenge to lead India by the youths under the name of Reform'n'ation.
This event was branded across the whole country by Techfest. After going through the event list and the structure, I was motivated to work out on this project but I need a team to work with. A well motivated team with strong determination and will power to change the existing scenario in India and prevent further deterioration.
After a long session of feedback and discussion with my friends Manisha Sinha and Chinmay Pradhan, we concluded and finalized the team for the event and started to chalk out the plans. The tasks mentioned Hard were our prime motive to tackle as they seemed us quite easy because we had been working on these tasks but we had to cross many hurdles to achieve the success.

Finally after long hours of debates and heated discussions we have started working on the various tasks lists and have set a deadline of Sept 30, 2013 to accomplish most of the Hard and Medium Tasks which require much labor and determination.

Lets hope that with our initiative to change our surrounding under the guidance of IIT-B and our faculty members we make a better India to live in.
